Born Scott Mescudi in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 30, 1984, the future Kid Cudi started rapping at the end of high school. Initially studying film, he dropped out of university to move to New York to further his music career where he released his first mixtape, A Kid Named Cudi, in 2008, catching the attention of Kanye West who featured the young singer on 808s & Heartbreak. Cudi released the single “Day 'N' Nite” in 2008 and, thanks to a popular remix of the song that gave it appeal in clubs, the track started to gain real interest, eventually hitting number 3 on the pop charts. In 2009, Cudi released his debut album, the autobiographical, sci-fi tinged concept album Man on the Moon: The End of Day, which hit Number 4 in the US charts. He would become one of the dominant figures in hip-hop in the next decade, releasing five albums including 2010’s Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager, 2013’s Indicud, and 2014’s Satellite Flight: Journey to the Mother Moon, which would all go top 5. He began side projects such as the rock band WZRD with Dot da Genius, and he scored a handful of acting roles during this time. He started the next decade with the biggest single of his career, “The Scotts”, a collaboration with Travis Scott that topped the American and Canadian charts and traveled to the top 10 in multiple countries around the globe. That same year he and Eminem enjoyed a number 22 hit with “The Adventures of Moon Man & Slim Shady”. In December of 2020 he issued “Man on the Moon III: The Chosen, his fifth album to land in the top 5, and his third to top both the R&B and rap charts.
