Ella Mai Howell is an English singer-songwriter who spent time in New York City as a teenager and returned to study at the British and Irish Modern Music Institute. She auditioned in 2014 for 'The X Factor' as a member of trio Arize but they did not earn a spot on the show. She released solo EP 'Trouble' in 2015 followed in 2016 by the EP 'Change', which reached number 20 on Billboard's Top R&B Albums Chart and number 38 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart. Her 2018 EP 'Ready' peaked at number three on the R&B Chart, number 17 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Chart and number 29 on the Billboard 200. Her eponymous debut album went to number one on R&B Albums Chart, number four on the R&B/Hip-Hop Chart, number five on the Billboard 200 and number 18 on the UK Albums Chart. Several tracks from the album also became hits. 'Boo'd Up' topped Billboard's Adult R&B Songs Chart, Hot R&B Songs and R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay charts, reached number four on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart and peaked at number five on Billboard's Hot 100. It was named Best R&B Song at the 2018 Grammy Awards and was nominated as Song of the Year. 'Trip' (2019) also went to number one on the Adult R&B, Hot R&B and R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay Charts, reached number six on the R&B/Hip-Hop Chart and peaked at number eleven on the Hot 100. 'Whatchamacallit' (2018) featuring Chris Brown went to number seven on the Hot R&B Chart, 'Gut Feeling' featuring H.E.R. reached number eleven and 'Shot Clock' (2019) peaked at number eight and peaked at number 19 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay Chart. Also in 2018, she featured on Meek Mill's '24/7' which reached number 24 on Billboard's Hot Rap Songs Chart and number 25 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Chart.
