During the first day of the sentencing hearing, Chassagne gave an emotional plea to lessen his sentence - calling her ex-boyfriend an ambitious and trusting person. Six-year-old Kai's mother Raina attested to the rapper's dedication as a father - and tried to urge the judge to consider leniency to break the cycle of black fathers being incarcerated and therefore separated from their children. Her pleas, however, did not work. Lanez was sentenced to a decade in prison. During the trial in December, Tory Lanez showed up to court holding his son Kai - stepping out of the car he had traveled in while lifting the boy out in his arms.
